Five Tips To Direct Models Away From Scam Agencies

Aspiring models will no doubt have heard about the numerous scam modelling agencies that aim to con people our of their money. Below you will find some tips that if followed will direct you away from these scams and towards legitimate agencies instead.

• No guarantees. Avoid scam agencies who guarantee you modelling work. In this very competitive industry it is the clients, the photographers or creative designers who will direct the choice of models for assignments, not the modelling agency itself. It all depends on whether you have the specific look that a modelling client is searching for.

• Is it regulated? Ensure that the agency is regulated by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The modelling industry is largely unregulated, which is why it is possible for scam agencies to operate. The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 were created directly to protect you, the models. Agencies that are regulated by BIS are directly inspected by department officials on a regular basis, which includes visits to the model agency’s premises.

• Do your research. If possible, visit the agency’s office directly to find out who will be representing you and how the business is run. You should be able to find testimonials that have come direct from the models, along with examples of recent assignments that the agency has completed. Scam modelling agencies will not be able to direct you to this kind of portfolio.

• Photoshoots and modelling courses. The only goal of scam model agencies is to take people’s money. This could be done by directing models to take part in an expensive photo shoot or enrolling on a modelling course, neither of which are necessary.

• Beware of model scouts. Finally, if you are approached directly by somebody in the street asking you to join their model agency, do not feel pressured into making a decision straight away. Take their details away with you and think carefully before you make a decision. Be wary of people using aggressive sales techniques.

If you follow this advice you should be able to avoid scam agencies. Once you have found a reputable agency to represent you, you can begin to enjoy your new career direction as a model!
