Gotcha Media & Ooyala Collaborate to Bring Live Video to MMA Fans in Japan
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Leading Japanese companies are working with Ooyala to drive rich media initiatives. Gotcha Media K.K., an industry-leading media firm that provides technology, solutions and strategic consulting services based in Tokyo, Japan, delivered a live stream of the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) boxing match between top heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko and undefeated Brett Rogers for the interim heavyweight title in November. Live Internet streams of the event generated ground-breaking viewer numbers in Japan and viewership of the VOD (video-on-demand) version of the content continues to grow even a month after the event. Given the scalability of Ooyala’s platform, Gotcha Media was able to deliver high quality video to over 15,000 concurrent viewers in Japan. Ooyala allowed Gotcha Media to strengthen its offering by leveraging a video platform that offers the management, publishing, analysis, and monetization of video content.
The MMA event was one of many pieces of content that Gotcha Media has offered under a subscription and pay-per-view streaming model online. The Ooyala publishing platform, along with the Akamai streaming network, allowed for quick and seamless deployment.
“Gotcha Media’s deployment of live streaming for this heavyweight fight showcases two important initiatives for Ooyala – live streaming and the growth in the Japanese market,” says Bismarck Lepe, Founder and President of Products at Ooyala. “In Q4, live streaming has become one of the fastest growing asset types in our system. We’re seeing enterprise customers, sports teams and educational institutions use live streaming as a way to build brand affinity and engage with their target audience in real-time. We will continue to add features to our live streaming capabilities in order to provide publishing customers with more flexibility to target and monetize their live streams.”
Leveraging Ooyala’s Backlot native syndication tools, content was syndicated to sites such as Yahoo! Sports Japan, Facebook, Twitter, Mixi, JapanToday.com and others. Gotcha Media monetized the streams resulting from relationships with Nissin U.F.O. and Electronic Arts.
“We licensed the rights to deliver the Mixed Martial Arts fight for the Japanese region, so being able to restrict access to the content to Japan was very important,” says Bastian Gerhard, CTO of Gotcha Media K.K. “And because Japanese consumers have fast Internet connections to their home, we needed a video platform that would deliver live HD video. After the event, we were able to use Ooyala’s analytics to show advertisers the value of advertising and sponsoring our events.”
Ooyala has over a dozen Japanese customers, including BroadMedia and Brosta Media. Ooyala has partnered with large resellers in order to deploy Ooyala’s publishing platform to both media and non-media customers. The partnership with Gotcha Media K.K. helps to further strengthen Ooyala’s presence in Japan.
