Research Methodology

Market Scope This strategic analysis is part of Frost & Sullivan’s continued coverage of the world unified communications and collaboration marketplace. The study provides an insight into voice messaging (VM) and unified messaging (UM) markets, with and emphasis on the latter. This research specifically focuses on customer premises equipment (CPE)based unified messaging and voice messaging solutions, i.e. solutions that are typically purchased and deployed by customers on-site.

The study highlights key technology and market trends that are impacting the messaging market. It provides profiles of selected vendors and an analysis of the competitive landscape in the unified messaging (UM) market. The study also provides current and forecasted revenue for the VM/UM market, current and forecasted shipment information for the UM market, and market share analysis of the messaging vendors.

The measurement metric used in this study is a user seat, also called a seat license. VM and UM revenues are calculated using the average manufacturer revenue gained from a seat license and the number of licenses shipped. To determine the true revenue gained from a UM seat, the price of a single UM software license is added to the price of the required hardware spread across the total number of seats associated with the hardware. In a given year, UM revenue = revenue gained from the seat license only (if it is an upgrade from a voicemail user) + revenue gained from seat license and hardware (if it is a new UM seat).

The estimated UM seats include those with just a Graphical User Interface (GUI), and those with both a GUI and a Telephone User Interface (TUI). Revenues due to additional capabilities like text-to-speech (TTS), fax, and speech recognition are also included.

Along with UM revenues, sales of voicemail seat licenses (where applicable) and voice ports contribute to the total messaging revenues. Automated attendant capabilities, if by default bundled with the voice messaging solution, are included in revenue estimations. Although discussed in the study, certain real-time capabilities, sometimes referred to as Unified Communications (UC) are not included in the actual revenue calculation. Furthermore CPE value-added services such as professional services, installation, maintenance, and managed services are not part of the study’s scope.

Seat and port sales include sales made directly to end users and sales through channel partners. Revenues from direct sales are factored at 100 percent while revenues from indirect sales are reduced by the margin accrued by the reseller. Indirect channels include distributors, system integrators, value-added resellers and service providers.

Very Important: Our UM seat numbers identify mailboxes that do not require any additional license or cost to “become” UM capable. We, at this time, do not know the exact quantity of mailboxes that effectively use UM, but we assume its high due to the fact that customers already paid for the capability (including any hardware and software needed).
